rare, special, uncommon headrest, it has both typical and a-typical Shona-style features, the first appears in the single engraved column and the second in the scalloped base height 16cm

Scalloped elements are unusual but used on a few headrests from the region as in the Jaques Collection accession number 5:209, reproduced in Wanless, Anne, Africana Notes and News, Johannesburg, 1987, another is number IIIc 3206 in the Neuchatel Ethnographic Collection, Switzerland.
