PROVENANCE
The Vivienne Linder Collection
Buyers on this sale will have an opportunity to purchase a rare piece of SA’s entertainment history when the final pieces of jewellery from Durban diva Vivienne Linder’s collection will be on auction.
Linder, who spent three years under the tutelage of Elizabeth Sneddon at the University of Kwazulu-Natal, Durban, continued her studies at the Webber-Douglas School of Singing and Dramatic Art in London, where she was one of the debutantes presented to the Queen at Buckingham Palace in the summer of 1958.
After studying and performing in London, Linder left the glitz and glamour of the West End to return to South Africa, where she continued to enchant audiences with her “sparkling voice and personality to match”. She regularly received standing ovations at the Hotel Edward’s famous Causerie restaurant, where she performed in a bygone era where dinner and dancing went on well into the night.
“Vivacious Viv”, as she was often called, was also famous for her sophisticated style, wearing glamorous evening gowns or slinky sheath dresses with plunging necklines offset by elegant jewellery, which she carried off with grace and poise.
Often likened to stars such as Audrey Hepburn, Julie Andrews and Eartha Kitt, Linder was not only famous for her stage performances but also the lavish dinner parties she threw at her fabulous home high up on Morningside’s ridge at 55 North Ridge Road, Durban.
Sparkling crystal, silver cutlery and glamour were the order of the day at these events, where the champagne and vichyssoise were both always served perfectly chilled.
