1 x 1998 Quinta do Vesuvio 1.5Lt. Magnum (Wooden Box), Provenance: Restaurant Mosaic Wine Cellar Collection
Quinta do Vesuvio is a Portuguese wine estate high in the rugged, arid upper Douro, producing a range of table wines and Ports. It is owned by the Symington group of wineries alongside the likes of Graham's, Warre's and Dow's.
After a mild June, July and August were hot and dry, leading to good even maturation, with the Tinta Barroca looking particularly promising. Maturation studies carried out between 19th August and the beginning of the vintage, determined the following picking order at Vesuvio: Old vineyards; Tinta Barroca; Tinta Amarela; Tinta Roriz; Touriga Nacional; Tinto Ca?o; and Touriga Franca. Picking began on the 21nd September and continued until 4th October; great care being taken to select and vinify the very best fruit separately, once perfect ripeness had been achieved. Properties in the Douro Superior performed very well in 1998, escaping much of the rain that fell farther downstream.
Finesse and power abound in this finely textured Vesuvio. Very intense red color with notes of purple. Concentrated aroma to wild berries and soft notes of black cherries. On the palate, it is full bodied, voluptuous aromas of cassis balanced by firm tannins. Ideal with a dessert, dark chocolate, cheese or on its own at the end of a meal.
"This wine has the dark fruit typical of this quinta, but this year shows more elegance than usual, with dusty tannins and concentrated, sweet fruit." - 90/100, Wine Enthusiast
