Ravenswood

In 1981 Anglo American acquired a derelict property in Hatfield Street in Cape Town. Dating back to 1835, the land on which Ravenswood stands was sold to William Storey Bridekirk for 77GBP. Bridekirk built Ravenswood and sold it three years later to Edward Eagar. Eagar went insolvent in 1855, and the house remained unchanged until its acquisition by Anglo American. The house changed hands and was lived in until 1881 by Hendrik and Cornelia Lind until Hendrik's death after which his widow ran a boarding house on the premises.
Cornelia died in 1888 and her unmarried sister Maria van Ryneveld ran the boarding house until her death in 1900. The house continued to operate as a boarding house under various owners, however gradual deterioration was inevitable and the purchase and subsequent restoration of the property by the Rhodes National Heritage Trust on behalf of Anglo American saved the house from demolition. It was furnished as far as possible in period furniture and the subsequent recent sale of the property has seen the furniture come to auction. We are particularly pleased to be able to offer a piece of Cape Town's history on this sale.
