A VALENTINE TYPEWRITER, DESIGNED BY ETORE SOTTSASS AND PERRY KING FOR OLIVETTI, 1969
Steel and ABS plastic, in the original carry case
Launched in 1969, the Valentine typewriter brought a measure of playfulness and humour into the humdrum world of the office.
Designers Ettore Sottsass and Perry King attempted to transcend the repetitiveness of typewriter design by incorporating Pop Art aesthetics into contemporary design, giving the typewriter an appealing and unique character. Shown here in its signature luminous red, the simple design is accentuated with textures and flourishes that add to its rich playfulness.
In a time where laptops, tablets and cell phones have replaced the portable typewriter, we are still encouraged to work in uninspiring environments. The Valentine is the perfect for those who are interested in breathing back new life into antiques, for the collectors interested in the history of design and Pop Art, for writers who want to press the ‘reset button’, to breathe, think and re-organise their minds enough to translate it into art. Or simply for someone who would like a statement piece on display.
