More Information

PLEASE NOTE THIS WINE IS IN JOHANNESBURG
Wedged between the Stellenbosch and Helderberg mountains, situated on the beautiful Mont Fleur farm, is the boutique De Trafford winery. The history of wine growing on this mountain farm started with the purchase of the property in 1976 by the Trafford family as inaccessible grazing land. Many of the high altitude slopes were deemed suitable for high quality red grape varieties. Unfortunately, due to the absurd quota restrictions, planting a commercial vineyard had to wait 18 years. In 1983 a small vineyard was established to produce experimental wines – consumed by family and friends! According to David Trafford, "These were our learning curve years ( 1984 – 1991 ), which included lots of help and advice from local winemakers and working experience in France, particularly in the Bordeaux area."

De Trafford's flagship wine, it is a selection of the best barrels from a vineyard at 393m above sea level. Usually the core of the blend is Cabernet Sauvignon which is in the middle of the vineyard. Followed by Merlot, from the richer clay soil at the bottom of the vineyard & Syrah, at the highest and steepest section. Usually, but not always, they add a little Cabernet Franc which adds a little spice and fine herbaceous character.

?The aim of De Trafford's Elevation is to express this remarkable site to the full and accentuate the character of each vintage, rather than a more homogeneous style. This has consistently been one of South Africa's top performing blends in the last 20 years.
