Rall Wines was established in 2008 and is owned and run by young independent winemaker Donovan Rall. After graduating with a Viticulture and Oenology degree from Stellenbosch University in 2005, extensive travels and harvesting all over the world in the next two years, Donovan returned to South Africa in 2007 for a season in the Swartland. Here he found his inspiration for the Mediterranean varietals and the dream of making these unique and styled wines under this own label from these scattered old vines were born. The focus was always going to be on one white and one red blend produced by hand in tiny quantities from the most unique and oldest possible sites he could find. The wine-making process is simple, each parcel is allowed to ferment and mature naturally to truly reflect the character of each vineyard.

Chenin Blanc from 3 vineyards, 2 old bushvine sites in the Paardeberg grown on decomposed granite and one trellised vineyard grown on the schist soils of the Riebeeksrivier. Verdelho from the Helderberg grown on deep red clay-driven soils. Viognier from granite soils in the Voor-Paardeberg. Winemaking is basic and wild yeast fermentation occurs in old 225, 300 and 400 liter French oak where it stays on the primary lees for 10 months without stirring before being racked and blended for bottling with minimal fining and filtration - only when needed.

“As he did in 2017, Donovan Rall made his signature white wine without any Chardonnay, going for a 60/35/5 blend of Chenin Blanc, Verdelho and Viognier from the Swartland and Stellenbosch. Firmly established as one of the best blends in the Cape, it’s still youthful and primary, but has stony reduction, fine lees and a medley of pear, citrus and stone fruit.” – Tim Atkin MW
