THREE EEMBA, OVAMBO, NAMIBIA
The ends of conus shells from the east African coast, cut to form a circular disc or omba (pl: eemba), were traded across southern Africa for centuries. Also called ndoro or mpande, they show the raised spiral inside and were both a currency and sign of status for communities of the region. The metal centres on two of these eemba, are exclusively found on some Ovambo examples and are for attachment to a married woman’s leather necklace or belt, often together with omakipa (sing: ekipa).
