Her work is driven by a fascination with identity politics and the specifics of her context. Shandre identifies as “coloured” or “mixed race” and this has a huge impact on the work she is currently making with her focus being centred around the crime and conflict in her home neighbourhood, Riverlea, Johannesburg. Constant gang violence, shootouts between illegal miners (Zama Zamas) and police causing casualties from stray bullets, as well as the miners causing the lands fragility, causing tremors under the houses where residents fear their houses falling in leaves the residents to feel forgotten about and ignored by Government.
Through her work she aims to create awareness around the inequalities in coloured communities and the effects these issues have on this communities daily lives.
