A LARGE BRONZE JAPANESE INCENSE BURNER

Japanese incense burner, marked Imperial Foundry Kyoto. This very heavy bronze incense burner is decorated with a rich idiom of symbolic decorations. On the front side of the "belly" of the incense burner, a pair of leopards in a bamboo forest, a group of pigeons in the sky, all executed in fantastic quality high relief.
On the reverse , a pair of phoenix birds in a jungle. The belly has two massive handles in the shape of phoenix heads. On the lower "belly" a dragon with crane birds flying in the skies. On the top of the incense burner, a massive bronze pierced lid with a ShiShi dog or dog of Foo, a mythological animal that guards the entrance of temples and wards off evil spirits.The incense burner stands on three bowed feet with masks of mythological dragon like animals. The mark of the Imperial Foundry can be found on the base and is square. High 77 cm, Wide 47 cm, Deep 37 cm. Weight: 21 kilo.
