The estate was originally founded in 1679 by Simon van de Stel, but by 1982, when it was bought by the famous wine writer John Platter, it was a farm named Avontuur. Platter was so impressed by the magnificent view, that he renamed it Delaire, which means “from the sky”. Situated high on the crest of the Helshoogte Mountain Pass which links Stellenbosch with the Drakenstein Valley it is indeed one of the most beautiful mountain passes in the world. Platter made outstanding wine here in the 1980's, but in 2003 it was acquired by Laurence Graff , the founder of the luxury jewellery and Swiss watch company. Graff transformed the estate into a world-class destination with a winery, restaurant, hotel and spa, and also installed one of the most advanced cellars in the Southern Hemisphere. The first wine under the Delaire Graff label was released in 2008. 20 hectares are under vine on the high altitude slopes of Botmaskop Mountain planted with Chardonnay and red Bordeaux varietals, and they also lease long-tern vineyards from other regions which are managed year-round by their own viticulturists. Their Shiraz and Sauvignon Blanc comes from other premium sites in Stellenbosch, and their Chenin Blanc comes from 35 year old bush vines in Swartland, Delaire Graff have been named one of the top 50 wineries by the World's Best Vineyards, and in 2020 were placed first within the African continent. The hallmark of Delaire Graff's award-winning meticulously crafted wines is intensity of fruit, and they are every bit as elegant and polished as you would expect from this creator of some of the world's finest jewellery - but these wines from this jewel of the Cape will not damage your wallet!
