Nuremberg: J. B. Homann, ca.1715-1720

Copperplate engraving with some hand colouring. Without centre fold. Blank on verso.

Image 49 x 58cm, on sheet 54 x 64cm

A lovely map of the area around Frankfurt, titled on a straight line at the upper edge, highly decorative in typical of Homann’s style. In the centre of the map is the city with its surrounding area, hand coloured in duotone. The lower half of the map is ornated with three vignettes showing a view of the city (centre), and the allegorical scenes of the coronation of the Holy Roman Emperor (right corner) and of city life (left corner)

Johann Baptist Homann (1664 – 1724) was a German geographer, cartographer and the founder in 1702 of the family publishing firm, active in Nuremberg until 1848. In 1715 Homann was appointed Imperial Geographer of the Holy Roman Empire, obtaining Imperial Printing Privileges, which protected authors in scientific fields. In the same year he was also named a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences. His most important work was the “Grosser Atlas ueber die ganze Welt” (Grand Atlas of the entire World). After Homann’s death, his son Johann Christoph succeeded him in the family publishing firm.

Condition: Good. Light stains to the left hand side of map. Bottom right hand corner is missing small piece. Light foxing and some repairs made to verso of map with slips of paper. Colours are bright.
