More Information

Augsburg: M. Seutter, ca.1750

Copperplate engraving with some hand colouring. Centre fold. Blank on verso.

Image 49 x 57cm, on sheet 53x 63cm

Seutter’s decorative map of the former diocese and principality of Halberstadt (until 1648, then actually a duchy), with the abbey of Quedilinburg and the county of Wernigerode, ruling of Oschersleben and Schladen in the north to Mansfeld in the south, from Daun in the west to Stassfurt in the east. Two beautiful ornamental cartouches, title and legend with scale bar, are placed at the upper right corner and lower left corner respectively.

Georg Matthaus Seutter (1647 – 1757) was a German map engraver and publisher. In Nuremberg he apprenticed as an engraver under Johann Baptist Homann and later established his own cartographic publishing firm in Augsburg, issuing large number of maps based on earlier Homann and De L’Isle works. From the 1730s he was one of the most prolific German publishers and was given by the Roman Holy Emperor the title of “Imperial Geographer”. His most famous work is “Atlas Novus Sive Tabulae Geographicae,” published in two volumes ca. 1730. After Seutter’s death, the firm continued under his son, Albrecht Carl Seutter.

Condition: Good. Small crease to bottom left-hand corner. Small staon and smudge marks to right hand side. A few minor spots of foxing, and a few very small instances of wrinkling. Minor stains and foxing to verso. Colours are bright.
