More Information

PLEASE NOTE THIS WINE IS IN JOHANNESBURG
Wedged between the Stellenbosch and Helderberg mountains, situated on the beautiful Mont Fleur farm, is the boutique De Trafford winery. The history of wine growing on this mountain farm started with the purchase of the property in 1976 by the Trafford family as inaccessible grazing land. Many of the high altitude slopes were deemed suitable for high quality red grape varieties. Unfortunately, due to the absurd quota restrictions, planting a commercial vineyard had to wait 18 years. In 1983 a small vineyard was established to produce experimental wines – consumed by family and friends! According to David Trafford, "These were our learning curve years ( 1984 – 1991 ), which included lots of help and advice from local winemakers and working experience in France, particularly in the Bordeaux area." Launched as early as 1995, at a time when high-end barrel fermented Chenin Blanc was almost unheard of, the Chenin is (like all the wines from this boutique property) hand picked and pressed in the famous basket press, fermented with natural yeasts, and bottled unfiltered.

Label painting by Rita Trafford titled: The Patterns of Ravens in my Sleep.

"Made with purchased grapes from Firgrove and the neighbouring Keermont farm, this has been a De Trafford staple since 1996. It’s all about texture and layers of flavour rather than primary fruit. Leesy, honeyed and savoury, it has flavours of beeswax and fennel and zesty acidity. Drink: 2017-21" - Tim Atkin MW 94/100
