The Neethlingshof estate in Stellenbosch is named after its illustrious 19th century owner, Marthinus Laurentius Neethling, who served as mayor of Stellenbosch and was also a senator in the old Cape Parliament. His flamboyant bearing earned him the nickname "Lord Neethling". The top wine range has now been renamed the Short Story collection, and the Noble Late Harvest wine, now renamed Maria, has been upgraded to this top range. Maria is named after Maria Magdalena Marais, the resourceful and feisty young widow who took over the building of the Neethlingshof estate’s manor house after the death of her husband, Charles, in 1813.
Neethlingshof is well-known for its Noble Late Harvest. This 'liquid gold' has been winning awards for decades, garnering a Veritas gold medal almost every year as well as the Agri-Expo Gold Trophy at the SA Champion Young Wine Show, while the 2004 won a gold medal at the International Wine & Spirit Competition, and the 2005 won a gold medal at the Michelangelo Awards.
The grapes were picked from vines planted in 1992 in deep, red Tukulu soils in south-facing vineyards situated 170 metres above sea level. The vineyard, known as "Weisser on the hillside"? received no irrigation.
