12 x 2015 Koen Rose (Spioenkop) Frozen (Wooden Case) (750ml), Provenance: Restaurant Mosaic Wine Cellar Collection
Sourced from Elgin with the focus on the largely clay soils with varying proportions of Iron gravel and a top layer of reddish Tukulu. The vineyards are 10 years old and come from a neighbouring fruit-producing farm of Spioenkop that is in the process of converting its vineyards to apple orchards. 2015 signalled the start of a dry era in the Western Cape, with a lot of wildfires, scorched vineyards and smoke tainted grapes, but for a lot of winemakers it also indicated the best vintage in years. What I can tell you: it was the earliest start in decades but also the most relaxing one for Spioenkop. We had beautiful, healthy vineyards with small berries, displaying amazing good colour and intense flavour. Warm weather in August resulted in earlier bud break and a windy, dry warm summer that kept the vineyard growth under control. Our biggest advantage was that we still had excellent cool night temperatures in Elgin that destressed the grapes at the end of the warmer days.
A perfectly sweet, open nose with hints of spice and herbs (pepper, bay leaf and cloves). Autumnal slightly forest touch with intense dark fruit aromas. A dense Ferricrete, Iron minerality and savoury structure with good acidity and some firmness. Good structured with attractive dark forest fruit and meaty black cherries that is carried by the new wood (300L French oak). Savoury in style with elegant firm tannins.
