More Information

PLEASE NOTE THIS WINE IS IN JOHANNESBURG
E. Guigal is one of the most notable wine producers in the Rhône Valley. It was founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal in Ampuis – where the headquarters remain to this day – on the western banks of the Rhône river, a stone's throw from the famous sun-roasted slopes of the Côte Rôtie. Hermitage is a small appellation with 140 hectares (345 acres) of vineyards, responsible for France's most enduringly prestigious wines. These are on a par with those from the Côte Rôtie to the north and Châteauneuf-du-Pape to the south.

The Guigals own 4 parcels in Hermitage, planted on limestone, clay loam and sandy topsoils that lie above the granite mother rock. They will also purchase grapes from small growers. Overall, vine age averages 30
years. The 2011 Hermitage was picked by hand and underwent a vinification of around 3 weeks. Aging took place for 36 months in barrels coopered exclusively by Guigal, 50% of which were new. Bottling was without fining or filtration.

"In 2011, the Guigals decided against bottling an Ex-Voto wine, so the grapes normally earmarked for that cuvée—from Les Murets and L’Hermite—went into this Hermitage. In typical Guigal fashion, it’s rich and sophisticated, the ripe fruit toasty with oak and enriched with notes of marzipan and lees. The acidity keeps it lifted, allowing some earthy minerality through—an element that will grow more expressive with another decade in the cellar." - Wine & Spirits Magazine 93/100
