2018 A.A. Badenhorst Family Wines Dassiekop Steen (750ml) x 3 bottles - Provenance: Restaurant Mosaic Wine Cellar Collection
Dassiekop is found high on the Paardeberg mountain and was planted on steep terraces in the early 1970’s by the father of Adi Badenhorst's neighbour, Pierre Rossouw, on the farm Uitkyk, planted in 1964. Not made in 2017 because of the drought. Foudre-aged with no skin contact. They only use old 1200L foudres for the fermentation and maturation of 15 months. After this the wine is are racked and bottled. ‘Steen’ is the traditional name for Chenin in Afrikaans while a ‘dassie’ is a cute, whiskery rock hyrax. Rated 93 points by Decanter "Baked apple and chamomile flavours join quince, mandarine, savoury oyster shell and hay notes on a tight, focused, complex palate. Very textured with apple skin grippiness and gentle oak from time in foudres. Delicious!" Also scored Jamie Goode 95/100
