AN IGBO PRESTIGE CARVED DOOR, NIGERIA, 1960s
height 210cm
"The compound head's house is referred to as Obit. The doors reflect forcefully the social and economic stature of the occupants, not to mention their good taste and style. The favoured wood used for doors is 'Rook "a hardwood associated with male power and certain mysteries. A rook tree can only be felled after ritual precautions and sacrifices to placate the strong spirit within. The decorative relief - carving takes time, careful planning and experience. Colin Sayers
