Lionel Smit is a multidisciplinary artist who has been revered for his large-scale portraits and sculptures. His work acts as an open-ended conversation about the relationship between the mediums of painting and sculpture.
The triptych on offer is an early work of Smit’s and is very different to the large portraits that we have grown accustomed to. There have been artistic representations of water in art for many centuries. The water surface transforms from being the perfect mirror that lured Narcissus, to the beast that terrorized the Argonauts. Water can have symbolic meaning as well, particularly when it is depicted in still life or figurative paintings. It is regarded as the universal metaphor for change in both literature and art since it is ever-flowing and capable of taking any form. In historical, ancient, and renaissance pieces, water is also utilized to symbolize purification and cleansing.
