Wallace carved her path in the artworld primarily during the 60’s and 70’s. Where the art market was saturated with abstract techniques, Wallace differed by always choosing the human subject as a source of inspiration. It has been said that Wallace chose subjects that were often marginalised in society and was influenced by the landscape of places such as Israel and Turkey. She has broadly been described as a realist painter, although the use of her flattened tones and her ability to capture the effect of light on utilitarian objects is underplayed with the use of this description.
Wallace’s presence within the South African art world has become canonically vital and the support she provided within the local South African artistic community is a legacy which is still felt today.
