Norman Catherine is perhaps best known for his exuberant portrayal of anthropomorphic creatures, rendered in boastful colours. Catherine’s career has seen many metamorphoses of styles, techniques, subject matter and medium, and we are extremely pleased to be offering a selection of large prints on paper that encompass the most iconic aspects of the artist’s oeuvre. While his works are seemingly joyful in their cartoon-like colour and humour, his pieces are often created with an overtone of darkness and cynicism. Catherine uses humour to address social anxieties through his visual language of colour and figures, with his works “vacillat[ing] between a gasp and a giggle”. The artist’s works are rebellious in nature, making them nearly impossible to classify or define. Tightroping the fine line between macabre and comedic, the artist’s juxtaposition of ideas and contradictory concepts, results in compositions that are bold and often unsettling. Catherine’s works are part of some of the most well-established local corporate, private and museum collections, as well as featuring in international collections such as MOMA. –AC
