More Information

Augsburg: Matthaus Seutter, ca.1730

Handcoloured copperplate engraving. Centre fold. Blank on verso

Image 49 x 57cm, on sheet 53 x 63cm

Fine example of Matthaus Suetter’s decorative and highly detailed plan of Dresden, titled at the upper edge in Latin and German. The plan shows the fortifications, streets, buildings and other points of interest, and includes two coats of arms set at the upper right corner, across the river cutting through the city. A striking bird view of Dresden is placed along the lower edge.

Georg Matthaus Seutter (1647 – 1757) was a German map engraver and publisher. In Nuremberg he apprenticed as an engraver under Johann Baptist Homann and later established his own cartographic publishing firm in Augsburg, issuing large number of maps based on earlier Homann and De L’Isle works. From the 1730s he was one of the most prolific German publishers and was given by the Roman Holy Emperor the title of “Imperial Geographer”. His most famous work is “Atlas Novus Sive Tabulae Geographicae,” published in two volumes ca. 1730. After Seutter’s death, the firm continued under his son, Albrecht Carl Seutter.

Condition: Good. A few small spots of foxing to map. Small repair to front left hand side, and to verso of map. Minor edgewear to bottom edge. Some foxing and small stain to verso. Colours are bright.
