THREE EEMBA, OVAMBO, ANGOLA
The ends of conus shells from the east African coast, cut to form a circular disc or omba (pl: eemba), were traded across southern Africa for centuries. Also called ndoro or mpande, they show the raised spiral inside and were both a currency and sign of status for communities of the region. The Ovambo people live on both sides of the Kunene river which forms much of the Namibia/Angola border and these three examples are from the Mbalantu clan of Angola. (3)
