Nuremberg: Homann Heirs, 1741

Copperplate engraving. Centre fold. Blank on verso. Framed.

Image 57 x 48cm, on sheet 62 x 55cm

Map of the Turkish Empire in Europe, its extension and regions on the continent shown in colours, including as well Dacia (Romania), part of Italy and of North Africa. A key at the lower left gives the scale in four mileage systems, and the cartouche at the upper left is composed and adorned by a series of ancient coins. The map is dedicated to Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand, Duke of Braunschweig-Lüneburg.

Johann Baptist Homann (1664 – 1724) was a German geographer, cartographer and the founder in 1702 of the family publishing firm, active in Nuremberg until 1848. After Homann’s death, his son Johann Christoph succeeded him in the family publishing firm, commonly known as “Homann Heirs,” "Homann Erben," "Homannianos Heredes," "Heritiers de Homann," and “Homannianis Herediluis.”

Johann Christoph Harenberg (1696- 1774) was a German Protestant theologian and historian. He is mentioned in the cartouche of this map, and a similar of Palestine, probably for the drawing of the coins adorning the title.

Condition: Good. A few small creases to map. Some stains to the bottom. A few small closed tears to the edges. One small instance of insect damage. Small chip to top left hand corner of frame, and light insect damage to rear backing of frame. Colours are bright.
