Algernon Charles Swinburne (1837-1909) was an English poet, playwright, novelist, and critic. He wrote several novels and collections of poetry such as Poems and Ballads, and contributed to the famous Eleventh Edition of the Encyclopædia Britannica. Swinburne wrote about many taboo topics, such as lesbianism, cannibalism, sado-masochism, and anti-theism. His poems have many common motifs, such as the ocean, time, and death. Several historical people are featured in his poems, such as Sappho ("Sapphics"), Anactoria ("Anactoria"), and Catullus ("To Catullus").

Condition: Very good. Book has been covered with protective plastic, fixed in such a way that the book is not affected by tape. Minor rubbing to boards and spine, and a few very slight stains to the boards. Binder’s stamp to front pastedown, and previous bookseller's label to front endpaper. Very slight indentations from the plastic covering to the endpapers. Text is clean and clear, and copy is well bound.
