Reyneke Chenin Blanc 2010 x5
750ml bottle(s)
In 1988, the Reyneke family bought the farm Uitzicht, a 90-acre farm on the ridge of the Polkadraai Hills, with spectacular views of Stellenbosch. Contemporaneously, Johan Reyneke began the lengthy process of the conversion from conventional farming to organic practices to a method of farming which was in accordance with biodynamic principles. Reyneke was the first farm in South Africa to achieve certification by Demeter International, the largest, and arguably, the most widely acknowledged biodynamic accreditation body in the world.
The farm produces several ranges of wines including Reserve, Biodynamic, Organic, and Vinehugger. They also produce a red blend named The Capstone with the proceeds of the wine helping the farm workers and their families.
"Raised in old oak casks from 70-year old vines, the outstanding 2010 Chenin Blanc has impressive fruit intensity beneath the sulphur (it was bottled one week before.) The palate is well balanced with a slightly honeyed texture with hints of honeycomb, dried orange peel, lanolin and spice. This a very complex, Old World Chenin Blanc that offers an intellectual challenge. Drink 2012-2020.
I was struck by Rudiger Gretschel, winemaker for Reyneke, located in the Polkadraai Hills of Stellenbosch. He expressed a very European outlook to winemaking and at times, contrary views to his fellow South African winemakers. As the country's only certified biodynamic producer he seemed to have a unique take on viticulture and as it transpired, Reyneke's wines are cerebral and intellectual, surfeit in character and individuality."
