Knight Commander's set of insignia, K.C.M.G., comprising neck badge and breast star, in gold, silver-gilt, silver and enamel, in R.& S. Garrard & Co case of issue, with two calling cards inscribed 'Sir Melmoth Osborn'

PROVENANCE: Awarded to Sir Melmoth Osborn, thence by descent
Melmoth Osborn was born in Worcester in the Cape on the 2nd of January 1834. In 1856 he married Martina Schrikker and had two sons and three daughters. He had served as Commissioner of Zululand from 1887-1893 and was awarded the KCMG on his retirement in 1893. The town of Melmoth (founded 1888) and the hamlet of Osborn were named after him. He retired to Pietermaritzburg and died in Durban on the 1st of June 1899.
